Restoration Surgery for Eyebrow Hair
Eyelashes and eyebrows are major components in the physical make-up of one’s face as they contribute greatly to facial symmetry and one’s appearance. If one lacks eyebrows then this can be a major dent to self-confidence, which is why many people turn to restoration surgery and transplantation. This is not only to restore one’s physical appearance but also one’s self esteem.
Eyebrows can be lost in a wide variety of ways such as:
- Physically induced trauma caused by such instances as; an automobile accident, chemical, thermal and electrical burns.
- Local or systemic diseases, which lead to eyebrow loss as well as inhibiting and preventing eyebrow growth.
- The inability to grow eyebrows from birth.
- Plucking eyebrow hairs that leads to permanent loss.
- Obsessive compulsive plucking, which is, in most cases, self-inflicted.
- Surgical and medical treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy and removal of tumors and growths.
Before one can consider hair restoration, the patient’s medical history is examined and checked. The following cases can hinder and cause complications for the surgery and recovery:
- If the loss is caused by local or systemic disease, it must be diagnosed and placed under control (usually by means of medication or stimulation), so that the hair restoration can be successful.
- Obsessive compulsive plucking would need to be restricted and controlled as it could possibly hinder recovery. It must be so that the patient does not touch their restored hair at all.
- If the loss was caused by traumatic burns or surgery, this may have resulted in scar tissue being formed which calls for the need of reconstructive surgery beforehand.
As well as all this, there are some patients, who have never suffered any kind of loss of eyebrows but feel the need to undergo surgery and restoration for purely cosmetic reasons,
The transplantation is performed by extracting small, micro-grafts and single hairs from a donor site and then placing them upon the eyebrow. As the donor is usually another person, they must have the same / similar growth orientation, texture and color hair so that after the replacement is over, the patient’s surgery is not noticeable.
Donor hair is usually taken from those with finer hair, as it is usually a much better match than coarser hair. Each donor hair is then placed one or two at a time into micro graft, which is then placed into a small incision. As the surgeons are dealing with only one or two hairs at a time, this means that the process is both precise and correct.
This operation is usually performed on an outpatient’s site with little to no post-operative distress or pain.
As the intention of the hair transplantation is to reconstruct the eyebrow in it’s natural shape which means both the doctor and patient must work together in order to determine which areas will be transplanted, sometimes this may require more than one operation at different times. The reason being for this is that transplanted hair will inevitably grow and therefore will need to be groomed. In some cases, the hair may even grow in a different direction and go against the patient’s natural contour but this case is easily solved with the application of wax and gel to retrain the hair to grow in the preferred and natural way.
